My Time in Tofino

By Kim Robinson
Managing Director, OVC Pet Trust

On Sunday, June 19, I had the privilege of attending the Smiling Blue Skies First Annual Woof-Fit on Chesterman Beach in Tofino.

Suzi Beber, the founder of Smiling Blue Skies, had invited me to attend her inaugural event and it was truly an honour to be part of what was an inspirational, intimate community gathering.  Suzi is a remarkable woman who founded the Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund in memory of her dog Blues.  All money raised directly benefits cancer research and discovery at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), University of Guelph. (For more information about Suzi and her work, please go to smilingblueskies.com).

While in Tofino, I enjoyed the remarkable hospitality of Suzi and her husband Tom – and their extended canine family, Jali, Sturgis and Jessie.  In addition, I was warmly welcomed by their friends, who had traveled from various parts of British Columbia to be part of Woof-Fit.  The event itself was wonderful: lots of great food and conversations; children creating beautiful memory boxes; and of course – dogs.  There were lots of them; out on the beach enjoying some doga (dog yoga); running, walking and even paddle boarding. They celebrated their athleticism with home-made doggie cake and treats.

Other than the beautiful scenery and ocean air, the thing I noticed the most during my short visit, was the way people were drawn to Suzi.  The community in Tofino knows her.  She was always met with a warm welcome at the establishments she frequents on a regular basis, as well as by local artisans, hospitality staff and members of the broader community.

It makes sense people know who Suzi is.  Tofino isn’t a big place.  What I have come to learn however, is that Suzi makes a point of knowing people, listening to their stories and providing connections.  Whether it’s a referral to a surf school, an excellent restaurant or a connection to a fellow dog lover in the community – Suzi knows how to listen and help people.

In its first year, Woof-Fit raised more than $13,000, and planning is in the works for next year’s event. It was an honour to attend and be part of such a great event and support someone who does so much for Pet Trust and the advancement of cancer research, treatment and support.
